Jean Hay Fairlight Lookout

A proposal to name a Fairlight lookout after Jean Hay AM has been raised to honour her extensive service and dedication to the community and local government. The proposed Jean Hay Lookout is in the park adjacent to the Manly Scenic Walkway, near Arlington Drive, Fairlight.

In a unanimous decision during the last Council meeting held on 27 February 2024, the  Northern Beaches Council has opened the proposal for public feedback until Sunday, 07 April 2024.

If the proposal is approved, the existing picnic setting in the area will be upgraded, and an interpretative sign commemorating Ms Hay’s remarkable achievements and contributions to the community will be installed.

The former Manly mayor also significantly contributed years of service at the Manly Council from 1999 to 2004 and 2008 to 2016.

Her accomplishments span various spheres, including her pivotal role in establishing Bear Cottage, developing the Manly Scenic Walkway, and enhancing Manly’s oceanfront walkways. Additionally, she was instrumental in raising funds for numerous charitable causes, such as the Sunnyfield Association and the Mobile Life Education classrooms for the Northern Beaches.

Mayor Sue Heins emphasised the significance of recognising Ms Hay’s 50 years of service to the people of Manly, citing her numerous accolades, including the Member of the Order of Australia and the Centenary Medal.

Residents can share their thoughts through an online comment form or by writing to the Northern Beaches Council via council@northernbeaches.nsw.gov.au or the ‘Naming Proposal – Jean Hay Lookout’, Northern Beaches Council, PO Box 82 Manly NSW 1655.

The name of the Fairlight lookout will align with the Council’s “Naming Our Reserves, Facilities and Roads Policy” and will not require approval from the NSW Government Geographical Names Board.
